friend,
Like you, like everyone, we have known many individuals who find themselves
living in institutions - beautiful children with special needs and disabilities,
beloved and aging parents, frightened friends who suddenly find themselves
hospitalized, overwhelmed teens who've lost their way.
In most institutions those we love are cared for in conventional ways. They
are fed and bathed, kept warm and medicated, and provided the continuum
of services that modern society defines as care.
But a medicated child is not necessarily a nurtured child, a steady rhythm
on a heart monitor does not measure loneliness, and a subdued teen is not
an inspired teen.
This is why support for Bread & Roses is so important to us. Every day of
the year, the volunteer artists of Bread & Roses fling open the doors of
one or more institutions around the Bay Area and provide nourishment for
the heart and soul. Through song, dance, story and more they enhance basic
care by generously giving the healing gifts of love, human contact, inspiration
and hope. No one we know does this as well as Bread & Roses and certainly,
no one we know has done it as long and as efficiently as Bread & Roses.
As
artists, we are privileged to be able to bring performance and inspiration
to tens of thousands of individuals around the world. Are there words to
express our gratitude to Bread & Roses for doing the same for those who
are isolated and institutionalized? Five hundred times a year, more than
once every day, Bread & Roses and its cadre of 1,400 volunteers is delivering
art and love on our behalf. That is a lot of love.
Today, we are writing to ask you to join us in supporting Bread & Roses
with a generous gift. This fall marks the conclusion of Bread & Roses' thirtieth
year and as Cassandra Flipper, Executive Director of Bread & Roses, told
us: "We are very close to reaching our fundraising goals for this special
anniversary. Your support today will make the difference between meeting
and not meeting our goals."
