We
are privileged to honor Albert (Al) Baez, without whom there would be
no Bread & Roses. Al passed away on March 20th at the age of 94, leaving
an extraordinary scientific and humanitarian legacy.
Al’s connections to Bread & Roses ran deep. He was the father of our
founder, Mimi Fariña, and his values even today inform and inspire our
mission and work. As his family wrote after his death, “In all aspects
of his life, he combined personal and professional roles as scientist,
environmentalist, teacher and humanitarian. In doing so, he nurtured
and conveyed values representing mankind at its best.”
Al was an active supporter of Bread & Roses. He was proud that Mimi
had both the vision and determination to create a community dedicated
to uplifting the human spirit and the healing power of music.
In recognition of Al’s belief in our work, the Baez Family has established
the Albert V. Baez Memorial Fund for Services for Youth at Bread & Roses
and made a gift in his honor.
The spirit that moved Al Baez and the Baez Family to be so generous
to Bread & Roses is the same spirit that moves thousands of other Bay
Area residents – the certainty that “hearts starve as well as bodies,”
and that the arts and artists can feed the hungry hearts of people living
in isolation.
Today, we thank you for making a generous gift to Bread & Roses, underwriting
the production of more than 500 performances during the coming year.
Your gift will uplift spirits and bring the healing power of live entertainment
to more than 25,000 men, women, and children who live among us but are
largely unseen. You can make your gift online by clicking
here. If you prefer, you can send a check to:

All of us will sincerely miss Al Baez’s personal support. We take comfort
in recognizing how many others, like you, are equally committed to the
mission that Al’s daughter Mimi Fariña embraced as her life’s purpose,
and knowing you will help ensure that our healing work continues.
We cannot do it without you.
